The road to an Elon Musk led Twitter has been long and rocky, and though it is not yet officially a done deal, it does seem likely that Musk will purchase the company, despite months of legal dramas. Now it also looks like Musk’s plan is to acquire Twitter so that it can become a part of his new, mysterious app that simply called “X.”

It Looks Like Must Will Buy Twitter After All

Musk tweeted: “Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app.” When someone replied that he could have just created his app from scratch, Musk’s response was: “Twitter probably accelerates X by three to five years, but I could be wrong.”

What nobody is really clear on is just what X is. Must first mentioned the new app in his presentation to prospective Twitter investors. This is where he described his bold ideas for the social media platform. His goal for X is to reach more than 104 million users by 2028, according to the New York Times.

Some people believe that X could be a giant app, similar to those that are popular in Asia, that combines a social media, messaging, and digital payment. It could be that he wants to combine all of the apps we use on a regular basis into one.

This could be similar to WeChat, a Chinese social media, messaging, and mobile payment app that boasts 1 billion users. WeChat makes it possible to do pretty much anything from paying at a street market, messaging friends and family, buying movie tickets, and sharing photos.

Almost everything is purchased through WeChat in China, and if not on WeChat it’s done on AliPay. Even unhoused panhandlers have QR codes to accept donations digitally.

At a town hall meeting with employees at Twitter, Must shared his admiration for this style of app. He said: “I think an important goal for Twitter would be to try to include as much of the country, as much of the world, as possible. You basically live on WeChat in China because it’s so usable and helpful to daily life, and I think if we can achieve that, or even get close to that at Twitter, it would be an immense success.”

Of course, since Musk already has a lot going on with the theme of naming his projects with the letter X, it makes sense that his app would follow this naming convention. He co-founded the website X.com and of course founded SpaceX. His son with musician Grimes is named “X Æ A-12 Musk,” and is called “X” for short.

Like a lot that has to do with Musk, it is not clear what the X app will be in the end and when it will come to fruition. It is also yet to be seen how the whole Must-Twitter saga will end.
