Born in Novo Mesto, Yugoslavia (present-day Slovenia) in April 1970, she was born Melanija Knavs. Melania’s parents are Victor, who was a car and motorcycle dealership manager, and Amalija, who worked as a pattern-maker for a children’s manufacturer. She has an older sister named Ines, who she is quite close with. She also has an older half-brother that she is not in contact with from her father’s previous relationship.

Melania’s upbringing was a modest one. She grew up in this simple apartment building located in Sevnica, in the Lower Sava Valley. While growing up there, her father was involved with the League of Communists of Slovenia. When Melania was a teenager, the whole family moved to a two story home in Sevnica, and later when she was in high school. she lived in a high rise apartment in Ljubljana.
