René and Céline were married for 22 years before he passed away after his battle with cancer. However, it didn’t take long for rumors to emerge about Céline dating people or entering into a new relationship. Céline’s first tour began in January in 1985, but in February, René’s wife, Anne Renée, left him and the tour stopped temporarily. As René was such a massive part of Céline’s career, it was not possible for the tour to continue while his personal life was in such a state of upheaval. He had to travel back home to resolve the divorce, which was a hugely dramatic event at the time, but also created the possibility for their relationship to begin in secret.
