Going to Mars Means Sacrifice
There are several reasons that going to Mars requires Alyssa and anyone else considering the trip to make sacrifices. First, it is best not to have a family. The trip to Mars is most likely one way and it could be dangerous. Going would involve leaving your family behind. Even without starting a family, there are still people that Alyssa must leave behind when she goes to Mars. For her though, it is worth the sacrifice to achieve her goal.
She Knows It Means Sacrifice
No Romance
Starting a family is not the only thing that she must be willing to give up. Simply being in a romantic relationship is out of the question. The danger and permanence of the mission mean that romance is a distraction that must be avoided. For Alyssa, this means waiting at least 15 years for a relationship and possibly waiting until she meets the crew that she will be spending the rest of her life with.
